Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is a difficult and serious chronic mood disorder that causes extreme changes in mood, energy, behavior, and activity and suicidal ideation. Its hallmark feature is unpredictably alternating between manic and depressive episodes . Manic episodes often involve heightened emotions, irritability, erratic behaviors, and actions that may have harmful effects. Conversely “depressive episodes” cause very low mood, blankness, and a loss of hope. Mixed episodes can present with both manic and depressive features.
Conventional treatment for this population typically includes oral antidepressant and mood stabilizing or antipsychotic medications. These medications together have a litany of unpleasant side effects and patients still suffer recurrent depressive episodes.
Studies have demonstrated that ketamine infusion therapy is effective in helping those whose bipolar disorder is not well controlled by lifting them out of their depressive episode. Scientists suspect that ketamine helps with bi-polar depression in much the way it helps with unipolar depression and much the same way it helps with all mood disorders - by allowing your mind to become “unstuck” from the sadness with which it was enveloped.
