Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a common neuro-psychiatric condition characterized by persistent, repetitive and intrusive thoughts, feelings, or images often followed by anxiety and/or physical actions. The antidepressant (SRIs) and (SSRIs) are the traditional OCD treatment but their anti-obsessive effects only start at eight to 12 weeks into treatment, if at all. Ketamine on the other hand, provides rapid anti-obsessive results with a more tolerable side effect profile. In one representative study patients OCD scores improved by approximately 50% in the hours following their first ketamine infusion treatment!
Similar to other mental health struggles, ketamine’s effectiveness at treating OCD is attributed to its ability to increase neuroplasticity by synthesizing neurotrophins in the cortex. This neuroplasticity can be thought of as cognitive flexibility - that is to say that the ketamine allows the mind to more easily accept the changes the patient wishes to make and shift out of old patterns.
