Anxiety
Anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent psychiatric conditions and despite many available treatments, low rates of long-term remission remain. Ketamine has been receiving increasing attention for its general ability to induce neuroplasticity and cognitive flexibility which is key to its role in treating depression-adjacent mood disorders like anxiety. Currently there is a fast growing body of evidence to support the use of ketamine in anxiety disorders. This encouraging evidence comes from case reports, case series, and controlled trials demonstrating proof-of-concept for ketamine infusion therapy’s role in the treatment of anxiety and anxiety spectrum disorders.
Ketamine's unique mechanism of action, rapid onset, and high rate of response has driven its use in clinical practice and propelled it into the sphere of anxiety. This finding is not particularly surprising considering that many traditional anti-depressants also function as anxiolytics. In contrast to traditional antidepressants whose side effects include dry mouth, insomnia, changes in appetite and sexual dysfunction ketamine is generally well tolerated by patients and has a limited side effect profile. You can read more about the possible side effects of ketamine here.
Not only is there a growing body of research to suggest ketamine has clinical applications in the treatment of anxiety disorders, but our own clinical experience (albeit anecdotal) has borne this out as well. On average our patients anxiety scores (as computed by the GAD-7) have improved by over 70%!
