Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a common neuropsychiatric condition characterized by persistent, repetitive, and intrusive thoughts, feelings, or images often followed by anxiety and compulsive actions.
Antidepressants have been the traditional treatment for OCD but their therapeutic benefits only begin eight to 12 weeks into treatment, if at all. Ketamine on the other hand, provides rapid anti-obsessive results with a more tolerable side effect profile. In one representative study, patients' OCD scores improved by approximately 50% in the hours following their first ketamine infusion treatment!
Similar to other mental health struggles, ketamine’s effectiveness at treating OCD is attributed to its ability to increase neuroplasticity. This neuroplasticity can be thought of as cognitive flexibility - ketamine allows the mind to more easily accept the changes the patient wishes to make and then facilitates a shift out of old patterns and into new ones.
